HDA partners with W.K. Kellogg Foundation

AUSTIN, TEXAS. – The 2015 National Hispanic/Latino Oral Health Education Campaign begins on June 30th.  The project is funded by a $50,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Mich.

“As the Hispanic Community continues to grow, oral health disparities are not being addressed at a pace that keeps up with the increase in the population size.  We look forward to an impactful partnership where we can empower the public with culturally appropriate oral health information,” voiced Dr. Vidal Balderas DDS, President of the Hispanic Dental Association.

Campaign efforts will be national in scope, but highlight and focus in cities where HDA has a professional chapter and be augmented through its 34 Dental Student Chapters. The focus centers on 3 key components;

1. Educate dental oral health professionals regarding the oral health needs of the underserved population in their communities suffering from untreated dental disease.

2. Educate private practitioners on how to strengthen and expand the public/private health safety net
through new innovative oral health providers and workforce models.

3. Educate the Hispanic/Latino population on disease prevention and dental health through bi-lingual
messaging and materials.

GREEN LIGHTS, Hunters Point

Forgotten New York -

I usually make it a habit to stay out of police precincts — I’ve never been hauled in for a crime, and the only other occasion I’d have to visit is if I have to report one. But exteriors are a different story, and the 108th Precinct building on 50th Avenue in Hunters Point is [...]

Over the winter [2015] I worked in DUMBO for several weeks. HDA/GSAHDA’s BOLD Program wins National Award

Hispanic Dental Association’s Building Our Leaders in Dentistry (BOLD) Program receives a 2015 Power of A Silver Award.

The American Society of Association Executives has named the BOLD Program one of its 2015 winners of its Power of A Awards,
which showcase how associations leverage their unique resources to solve problems, advance industry/professional performance,
kick-start innovation and improve world conditions.

“Each year, the Power of A Awards recognize the lasting, positive impact associations have on society,” said ASAE President and
CEO John H. Graham, FASAE, CAE. “The awards give us a chance to celebrate the extraordinary activities that associations undertake.
They give us specific, moving stories that we can share with policymakers, the media, and other key audiences to increase awareness
about the association sector and its contributions to America and on a global level.”

The BOLD Program was created in South Texas by the San Antonio Chapter of the Hispanic Dental Association.  The program and
its components are now replicated by other chapters of the HDA throughout the US.  The BOLD Program has reached over 3000
students since its inception.  The goals of the program are geared towards encouraging minority youth to enter the dental profession
while providing those who choose the profession with financial support, scholarships and mentoring.

The formal award presentation will be made at the upcoming HDA 25th Anniversary Conference, August 14-15 in San Antonio, Texas.
