WALT WHITMAN LIBRARY, Fort Greene

Forgotten New York -

The Walt Whitman Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library is located on a short piece of St. Edward Street that has been “permitted” to survive by city planners in Fort Greene, just north of Myrtle Avenue and Fort Greene Park. The “good gray poet” who once lived nearby, edited the Brooklyn Eagle, and inspired Fort […]

WALT WHITMAN SLEPT HERE, Fort Greene

Forgotten New York -

Best known for “Leaves of Grass,” the revolutionary collection of twelve poems (expanded on in later editions) that first appeared in 1855, as well as “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” and “I Sing The Body Electric,” Walt Whitman was born in West Hills, Long Island, in 1819. The young Walt worked as a typesetter and pressman in the 1830s […]

HOBOKEN TO THE HEIGHTS

Forgotten New York -

I’ve done a great deal of photography in Hoboken and Jersey City beginning in 2014; I’ve covered just about all the north-south streets in Hoboken and have done quite a bit in the downtown and Hamilton Park and Harsimus Cove areas of Jersey City as well. In 2008, I dedicated quite a bit of time to Jersey […]

NEW ‘CANYON OF HEROES’ STREET SIGNS

Forgotten New York -

The Downtown Alliance, a business improvement district representing lower Manhattan including the Financial District, first unveiled a set of black and white street signs back in 2000, most of which featured a building or scene from the general neighborhood. Most of those original signs are still surviving including a couple purposely retained that featured the […]

CORBITT’S WINES & LIQUORS, Richmond Hill

Forgotten New York -

At Corbitt’s Wines & Liquors, 118-04 Jamaica Avenue opposite the old Triangle Hotel where Myrtle Avenue ceases its unrelenting march eastward from downtown Brooklyn, it could be 2006, 1996, 1986, 1976, 1966, or 1956. Or even 1946. That’s how much things are seemingly unchanged here as the years and drinkers roll past. Year after year, […]

SUBWAY PLATFORM LAMPS

Forgotten New York -

It’s been over seventeen years since the very first Forgotten NY post (which concerned a repurposed trolley depot on Northern Boulevard and Woodside Avenue) and while I’ve covered a lot of aspects of the NYC subways, including signage, standard and nonstandard; old methods of station design and new methods; abandoned subway stations; and retired subway […]

Westchester Square, even to the present day, appears to be a small town hub, clustering around the triangle formed by Westchester, East Tremont and Lane Avenues. Forgotten New York -

As you’re passing the large mansion called Oak Ridge on Forest Park Drive about 3/4 mile north of Park Lane South in Forest Park, it looks as if a private domicile that had existed since the 19th Century had been swept up and included in the park as it was built around it. NASSAU STATION, Richmond Valley

Forgotten New York -

Without a doubt, the most decrepit transit station of any kind in New York City (and that’s saying something, given the condition of the BMT Chambers Street station under City Hall) is the Nassau station on the Staten Island Railway, a couple of stops before its terminal at Tottenville. The overpass over the tracks is […]
